The latest generation of bright young things returned to Bedford this week for their official graduation from the University of Bedfordshire.

Graduates were rewarded in four ceremonies at Bedford Corn Exchange on Thursday and Friday, and took part in the traditional procession through Bedford town centre.

The Rev John Pedlar was among those who were rewarded, after he received an honorary Master of Arts award.

Mr Pedlar, vicar of St Paul's Church, Bedford, is a well-known figure in town and has represented many
communities through his work on the Council of Faiths.

Later this year he will be awarded the title Honorary Canon of St Albans to recognise his long and dedicated service to the church. Mr Pedlar said: “I am delighted and very honoured to be here today, among all these students who have worked so hard. I believe this award is not just for me, but for all the community and people I have worked alongside over the years.”

Honorary awards were also presented over the two-day period to Paul Wells, the managing director of Bedford brewery Charles Wells, and to David Bell, the former chief executive of Bedfordshire County Council.

And an honorary Master of Arts was handed to Helen Elkington, who used to be a Principal Lecturer at the university. Her CV also includes a time as stroke coach for the Great Britain Olympic swimming team for the 1968 Olympics, and as team coach for the Junior British Synchronised Swimming Team between 1971 and 1977.

She said: “It is an honour to be here today, this is a special day.”
